University of Florida - Hough Hall

Project: University of Florida - Hough Hall

Location: University of Florida Campus, Gainesville, Florida

Client: University of Florida

Budget: $23,000,000

Time Frame: 2007-2010

Located within a National Register Historical District, the William R. Hough Hall is home for the Warrington College of Business Graduate programs. Brown & Cullen Inc. provided master planning, civil engineering design, and site civil construction services for this “Gold” LEED certified, award-winning project located at the historic entrance to the University of Florida. Originally a parking lot landscaped with mature oaks and green space, building placement required demolition of an existing parking area and creation of a new “entrance vista” to serve the area. Utilities and stormwater management posed unique challenges for this project. Significant coordination and extensive review of design alternatives resulted in creative solutions for new utility services and the relocation of the existing utilities, while maintaining all existing services throughout construction. In support of other sustainable building practices, stormwater management for this project incorporated Low Impact Development (LID) design features including pervious pavements and depressed landscape areas, which provide retention/detention benefits to improve water quality, minimize erosion, and reduce the migration of sediment into downstream water bodies.
