NW 5th Avenue Streetscape

This culturally significant and historic corridor has traditionally functioned as the center of activity for the area known as the Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street community. Lined with residences and neighborhood businesses, the revitalization of the NW 5th Ave. multi-use corridor, is a priority of the Gainesville CRA. Brown & Cullen, Inc. (BCI) provided engineering services for the master planning of the streetscape improvements for this urban renewal project. In addition to the master planning, BCI also provided engineering and construction services for the redevelopment of the second phase of the streetscape improvements, which included wider brick paver sidewalks, new crosswalks, decorative roadway and pedestrian lighting, underground utility additions, new pavement, and new curb & gutter. Coordination with existing property owners and neighbors was a very important aspect of this project to keep the community aware and actively engaged in the design and construction process. Major utility coordination was a critical design component due to limited right-of-way and the density of existing utilities. The construction administration, construction inspections, and contractor coordination provided by BCI was a highly successful and integral part of this project which resulted in the project being completed under budget by $5,000, and finished in only 8 months. This important street has been transformed into a showcase for the CRA, the neighborhood, and the City of Gainesville.
