Gale Lemerand Drive Relocation
Project: Gale Lemerand Drive Relocation
Location: University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida
Client: University Athletic Association
Budget: $750,000
Time Frame: 2006-2009
Due to a major expansion of the University of Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, a portion of North-South Drive was encroached upon, and needed to be demolished and reconstructed. This roadway section was required to be re-routed around the expanded stadium, and was planned for significant streetscape improvements. Brown & Cullen was hired by the University Athletic Association to provide planning and civil engineering design services for the project. BCI studied the effect of the roadway re-routing, utility relocations, parking lot impacts and pedestrian improvements for the corridor, and developed a design that addressed each of these issues. The design effort required significant coordination with several utility providers to ensure existing utilities remained in service during construction activities. An important design aspect was the maintenance of traffic, which was critical during the construction process, as a very minimal time was allocated for roadway shutdown. BCI’s design and construction coordination efforts were instrumental in completing this roadway project, which accompanied a major chapter in the ongoing evolution of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and provided a high-quality aesthetic improvement to this important gateway entrance to the University of Florida campus.
